Spirituality 101 Report: Eliminating Toxic People
When I started on my spiritual journey 27 years ago, I never considered I would still be challenged by people so late in my journey. I certainly did not ever consider eliminating my mother and sister as part of that equation. In looking back to my past, I should have seen the warning signs. The intermittent times of separation with both should have been red flags, but I was blinded by my unwavering loyalty.
My perceived loyalty though was unilateral. I did not believe in myself enough to command the respect that I deserved, and the respect that God requires. You see, in God’s world everyone is equal. One must command respect and reciprocity in order to be right with God. He expects all his children to give and receive blessings. The way to finding a balance is in eliminating those most toxic to you.
As I stated, I have been called by God to cut my own mother out of my life. This may sound and seem very harsh, but it is necessary for me to move forward on my spiritual path. The weight of the negativity has the ability to hold me back, and weigh me down. When I decided to turn my life over to God, I jumped of the cliff without a parachute, and I have learned to trust God’s greater plan. It took a long time to recognize how toxic my family was because when that is all you know, it seems normal. It is only in having my own children and turning my life over to God that I am able to see with true clarity now.
How bad does the relationship have to be in order to justify cutting someone out of your life? How long will you take the abuse or disrespect? How much does a person have to push before you say enough is enough? Is today the day you say no more? When you start to eliminate those most toxic around you, you will start to see your life become more peaceful as long as you are at peace with cutting them out. It does not serve you to cut them out, only to feel guilty. That would be counterproductive. In making those hardline decisions, you are also making room for new people and connections. God only allows so many seats, don’t let anyone hold an open seat in your life.
